Benvenuto a Italia! This exquisite land known for its stunning scenery and architecture as well as incredible food and iconic works of art will provide the backdrop for our 2019 screenwriting retreat. Featured in countless movies such as Call Me By Your Name, Life is Beautiful, and Under the Tuscan Sun, there will be no shortage of inspiration to draw from within the beauty of the fabled Italian countryside

The Experience

We’ll be nestled in our own Tuscan hideaway tucked amidst the lush hills overlooking the Camaiore valley. This historic hamlet dating back to the 14th century had fallen into disrepair until the prolific Italian sculptor Fiore de Henriquez purchased it, spending the next 30 years restoring it as a sanctuary for artists. Many of her sculptures are found throughout the grounds. Though De Henriquez passed away in 2004, the current managers have maintained the hamlet’s bohemian character and simple, inviting appeal. They are dedicated to ensuring everyone feels comfortable and at home.
You’ll be welcome to roam the grounds at your leisure and find a writing alcove all your own. Surrounded by the opulence of nature, this rustic retreat offers plenty of privacy and tranquility in which to focus, dream, and create. Wander the grounds laden with chestnut trees and wildflowers. Curl up under the shade of a terrace in the olive grove. Soak up the sweeping views of the valley as you take a dip in the pool, particularly spectacular at sunset.
During your stay, we’ll be offering screenwriting lectures, readings, and feedback sessions. We’ll also have movie nights and discussions breaking down the seven-act structure of the script. Plus, expect a few special surprises designed to help you tap into your creativity and unearth new, perhaps Italian-inspired, ideas for your screenplay.
There will be ample opportunity for an excursionoptional tours and excursions to explore the surrounding areas as well. Already on our agenda will be an amazing tour of the famed Carrara Marble Quarry. Located in Tuscany’s Apuan Alps, these marble mines have been used for centuries to create dazzling landmarks and magnificent sculptures, including Michelangelo’s David. You may also choose to Vvisit the small village of Pieve for an afternoon lunch or spend a day among the locals in Camaiore. Venture out to the Candalla Waterfalls or discover historic landmarks. Day trips to a number of other nearby cities, such as Florence, will be available. Naturally, there will be abundant, authentic Italian cuisine and, for those who enjoy it, savory wine to sample!

The Writing

Join us for this one-of-a-kind screenwriting getaway where you’ll commune with other writers, nature, and your own creative muse in a setting like no other.

Screenwriting lectures, discussions, and feedback sessions will all be taught by Jake Krueger. Additionally, Lacy Daigle and Audrey Sussman will be sharing holistic methods of tapping more deeply into yourself and your art with meditation, hypnosis and tarot.

There will be two retreat sessions from which to choose:

Session 1: Saturday, September 14th – Saturday, September 21st

This first session will be more instruction focused, with 1 daily block of writing time per day.

Session 2: Saturday, September 21st – Saturday, September 28th

The second session will have more scheduled free time for you to write between classes and will offer more holistic classes to open you up creatively and dive deeper into your characters and your script.
