THE RETREAT
The writing day begins with a yoga session on a gorgeous outdoor pavilion, nestled within an organic garden. Students enjoy an organic home-made breakfast, before heading to the silent writing lounge, the comfort of their own room, or the outdoor cafe for a day spent with their writing.
Throughout the day, students enjoy opportunities for screenwriting lectures, readings of student work and feedback sessions with fellow students, classes in Balinese arts, and of course, plenty of time to curl up with a laptop, or explore the beautiful and spiritual surroundings of Ubud, Bali.
When students complete their work, they cool off with a dip in the fabulous salt-water pool or a visit to the hotel spa for the massage of a lifetime, and then join fellow students for an organic gourmet dinner, chat about their writing and experiences.
Each night, we watch movies under the stars, projected on a huge screen, as well as discussions, seven-act structure breakdowns, and special surprises designed to capture the spirit of Bali and put everyone in touch with their creativity.
THE HOTEL
Swasti Eco Cottages is a charming hotel of 14 individual cottages and bungalows with a swimming pool, an organic gourmet restaurant and vegetable garden (from which most of the fresh food used in the kitchen is grown), and an Eco-Spa providing 100% natural well being treatments.
Located in Nyuh Kuning, a small and quiet woodcarving village adjacent to central Ubud, directly across from the famous and exciting ‘Monkey Forest’ and less than a 5 min walk from the center of town.
EXCURSIONS AND EXPLORATIONS
Students get to know Bali with a bicycle tour through local villages, with a walk through the rice fields, by exploring the local woodworking village, wandering through the monkey forest, stumbling upon a Balinese ceremony or a traditional dance performance, watching the local shopkeeper make an offering to the gods, and taking a trip to the beach for some of the best snorkeling or diving in the world. This is the world of Ubud, the spiritual and cultural center of Bali, where creativity is and spirituality are omnipresent.
Group tours include an all-downhill bicycle tour, trips to coffee plantations (where the brave try Bali’s famous Luwak coffee), and a day of snorkeling.
An on-site travel agent helps students plan their own experiences and their own tours and continuing adventures.
THE UBUD WRITERS FESTIVALÂ
The retreat coincides with the dates for the famous Ubud Writer’s Festival, giving students a chance to meet writers from around the world!
